Nintendo’s Pokemon series is beloved across the globe for its unique characters, engaging storylines and addicting game mechanics. One of the most iconic features of the franchise are the various collectible items known as Gimmick Coins, which have been in the series since its inception. The most recent addition to the Gimmick Coin collection is a pair of coins from Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, which have been gaining traction among collectors recently.
History
Gimmick Coins were first introduced in 1996 with Pokemon Red and Green Versions. Since then, every main-series Pokemon game has added at least one new Gimmick Coin to their respective roster. The coins are usually given as rewards for completing special quests or bonus objectives, though some can be found simply by exploring the world.
The Scarlet and Violet Gimmick Coins were released alongside the two respective games in 2014. They feature an image of their respective color’s starter Pokemon – Charmander for Scarlet and Squirtle for Violet – on one side, while their opposing colors are on the other side.
Function
The primary purpose of Gimmick Coin is to serve as a form of currency within certain stores within each game. They are accepted as legal payment by vendors such as Boutiques and Game Corners found all over Kanto, Hoenn and Sinnoh regions. In Pokemon Scarlet and Violet they can be exchanged at any Poke Mart or Poke Center in exchange for items such as rare pokemon or healing potions.
In addition to their use as currency, they also serve a more decorative role in that they can be used to decorate players’ homes or bases of operations depending on where they are located in game
