Released in August 2020, Monster Crown is a role-playing game that blends elements from the popular Pokémon series with open world exploration and simulated evolution inspired by the earlier game Creatures. Developed and published by Studio Aurum exclusively for the Nintendo Switch, Monster Crown has been gaining a lot of traction among hardcore RPG fans. While it is not as polished as other games in the genre, it offers an intriguingly expansive world with plenty of secrets to explore.
Unique Battle System
Monster Crown, like most RPGs, focuses heavily on its battle system. The main draw here is its focus on simulated evolution, allowing players more control over their creatures’ stat growth and move choices. Rather than select from predetermined movesets like in Pokémon, characters can learn any combination of moves they wish. This allows for infinite strategic possibilities and gives players a chance to utilize more powerful combinations than would otherwise be available in predetermined movesets.
Monster Crown, unlike many RPGs also relies heavily on its unique dueling mechanics. Players must select two monsters from their party to send out into battle at once and must switch between them periodically to affect which creature is being targeted by their opponent’s attacks. Additionally, each creature has four distinct stats that can be leveled up independently of one another, making it easier to tailor each monster’s growth to fit specific strategies.
Open World Exploration
Monster Crown also stands out in its open world exploration component. As players progress through the game’s storyline they will continually come across new areas filled with secrets awaiting discovery. Many of these areas require special items or abilities only accessible later in the
