
Kirby, the iconic pink puffball from Nintendo’s video game series, turns 30 this year. On April 27th, 2021, Kirby’s creator Masahiro Sakurai took to social media to commemorate the character’s milestone anniversary. Sakurai posted a heartfelt message that paid homage to the history of the beloved character.

In his message, Sakurai recalled how when he created Kirby for Nintendo back in 1991, he had no idea that it would gain such worldwide success and widespread adoration. He thanked fans everywhere for loving and supporting Kirby throughout the decades and said he was looking forward to many more years of Kirby games.
Sakurai also revealed that this June will mark the 30th anniversary of when Nintendo first released Kirby’s Dream Land on the original Game Boy. He fondly reminisced about how his initial design concept for Kirby was inspired by a loveable creature from a children’s book.
Fans Celebrate On Social Media
Sakurai’s post quickly gained attention on social media as thousands of fans came together to show their appreciation for Kirby and celebrate its birthday. Many shared screenshots and videos featuring their favorite moments from previous games in the series. There were also plenty of fan art pieces dedicated to the pink puffball and many messages wishing it a happy birthday.
Nintendo itself even joined in on the celebrations, using various social media accounts to post messages in honor of Kane’s birthday as well as screenshots showcasing new gameplay features in upcoming titles such as Super Kirby Clash and HAL Laboratory’s Newest Game.
