Nintendo fans have something new to be excited about – the Mother 4 Unofficial Fan Project. This ambitious effort is looking to bring a sequel to the beloved classic RPG series that has been unrepresented on a Nintendo console in almost 20 years. In this article we’ll take a look at what this project aims to achieve, who’s involved, and what we can expect from the project.
History of Mother Series
The Mother series of RPGs first debuted on the Famicom in 1989, and quickly gained a loyal following with its unique humor and heartwarming themes. While the sequels weren’t as highly acclaimed as the original game, they did allow players to explore new worlds and characters. The last installment in the series was Earthbound 64 (later renamed Mother 3), released for Nintendo 64 in 2006.
Since then, Nintendo has not released an official sequel despite fan demand for one. Fans have created unofficial ROM hacks of existing games as well as original works inspired by the series while waiting for an official game release.
The Unofficial Fan Project
The goal of this fan project is simple – create an unofficial sequel that pays homage to all four entries in the series. The team behind this endeavor consists of dedicated fans that include artists, musicians, level designers, voice actors, writers, coders, and more.
“Our team is committed to delivering you an experience worthy of being part of such an iconic franchise,” said Tyler Lindell-Lucas (known online as The Mejoneser), one of the lead developers on the project. “We’ve done our best to capture what made these games so special while also bringing a fresh look and feel.”
